ADHD Parenting Handbook – Colleen Alexander-Roberts

Book review

Professional techniques for parents and teachers

A handbook, subtitled “Practical Advice for Parents from Parents”, with lots of advice from parents of ADHD children. Though well-written, Alexander-Robert’s book is a little too focused on preventing and managing bad behaviour – rather than stressing the need to understand, empathetically coach, and to guide and support your child.

There are useful recommendations and tips come from parents of ADHD children, based on hundreds of experiences gathered in surveys. There is also plenty of advice from paediatricians, counsellors and teachers too.

The book has sound advice on working with teachers and in providing a stable and nurturing family atmosphere for all the family.

Alexander-Robert offers management techniques that a family and child can utilise to survive everyday life: morning activities, homework, friends, summer holiday blues etc.
