A few of my Favorite Books on ADHD

Here's a list of some of my favorite books on ADHD:

Action Coaching

The primary problem listed by Adults with ADHD in surveys is procrastination. But this is not a simple issue of motivation or of understanding, it is an issue of doing. Traditional therapy and coaching that focus on motivation and planning simply don't work, or work for a weeek or two only. People living with ADD struggle with forgetfulness, planning, activation and in doing what is interesting not what is important.

ADD and Loving It?!

I recently recommended this fantastic documentary in my Newsletter, but wanted to mention it here too. If you have forty minutes to spare do yourself a big favour and watch ADD & Loving It?! Shown on Canadian Global TV, the film stars comedian Patrick McKenna as he confirms his long-suspected ADHD.

Doing Things

As an ADHD coach, I often work with clients who know what they want to do but just don't do it. These clients understand perfectly well how to plan and manage their time. They know what is important and what isn't. Yet they get up day after day and fail to plan, fail to review, fail to take action, fail to achieve their goals. They know why and what they need to, yet do not change.

ADHD Opposites

Many of  the wiser scientists and researchers define ADD as a dis-regulation of attention, which comes close but not close enough to a definition I hope for. I see people with ADD as being neurologically "less-controlled", which is not necessarily a bad thing. This lesser control of the brain means a much wider variation in which parts of the bain are dominant, which parts are more active and which parts are under-active.

What makes us happy?

So what does make us happy? There are many elements that together can add up to increased happiness. Family and friends are crucial, with a bigger effect on happiness than salary. Finding peace through meditation, having meaning in life, belief in anything from religion to a philosophy of life and strong values, all can make a major contribution to happiness. Having realistic goals that are enjoyable to work on can help boost happiness too.

Atypical-Dopamine Hedonistic-Disposition

I am frustrated by the term Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder when for many there is no deficit of attention, for a significant proportion of adults and some children there is little hyperactivity (though usually there is mental hyperactivity) and having an intelligent fast brain, creative skills and strong intuition is hardly a disorder.
