"Tear & Share" Support Group Guidelines

Why Guidelines?

These guidelines have been put in place to agree the emphasis and objectives of our ADHD group and also to provide a framework so that attendees can feel confident and safe within the group in terms of confidentiality and acceptable behaviour.  Here they are:

"Tear & Share" ADHD Support Group Guidelines

Mutual Support and Education - We wish to share and learn from our respective individual journeys and experience. We wish to develop our collective knowledge about being ADHD adults in order to apply this to our own development and where appropriate & feasible, the ADHD community.

Confidentiality - We will not share personal information or matters discussed in confidence within the group outside of the group. We may make a generic reference to an issue discussed but must never attribute comments to an individual or allow them to be identified as a result of a comment.

Punctuality - We will arrive and finish on time.

Behaviour - We will act in a courteous way toward each other at all times. The spirit and intention of the group is to have fun and to leave each meeting feeling wiser and happier for the experience.

Attendees - The Support group is intended for Adults with ADHD. There is no need to have been medically diagnosed. Partners of ADHD adults are welcome to attend by prior agreement and providing they agree to these guidelines. Adults with ADHD and other challenges (Aspergers, BPD, Dyslexia) may attend but are requested to confine discussions to ADHD only.

Respect - We will accord everyone the attention and consideration that we would wish for ourselves. We will not insult or denigrate people inside or outside our group, this includes NOT making racist, sexist or other discriminatory remarks

‘Air’ time for all - Everyone will have a chance to speak but will not monopolize the conversation.

Questioning and Clarifying - We may ask questions of each other to help us refine, reflect and learn about the issues we raise.

Sharing not Advising - We will not give advice nor judge each other. We will share our experiences and the stratagems and insights that have helped us.

Focus - On the current topic and/or speaker – do not talk across the group or engage in side conversations whilst we are ‘in session’.

Our Right Not to Speak or to Say "No" - We do not have to join in the discussion of every topic we discuss – or answer a question if we would prefer to ‘pass’ on it. However, we are expected to contribute to the group in some positive way.

Learning - We will acknowledge and take responsibility for our own learning, including developing an understanding of our own learning style preferences and our impact on others.

Any person unable to follow these guidelines will be approached respectfully by other members and reminded of the required standards and helped to co-operate.
